How to Overcome Negative Self-Talk

How to Overcome Negative Self-Talk

The conversations we have with ourselves are more important than any other. Do you find yourself consistently beating yourself up over mistakes you make? Do you get stuck in stories you tell yourself that do not serve you well anymore, such as, “I can’t do x or y?” You’re not alone. Most of us deal with these issues. However, with practice and training our mindset, we can reframe the stories in our heads and have them work for us instead of against us. Mindset is the key to living a healthy and fulling life. It is the glue holding our health and human performance together.

In looking at the thoughts and stories we tell ourselves, remind yourself that they come and go. When negative self-talk pops into your head, have compassion for yourself. Become aware of the thought, label it, and let it pass. This process takes practice and stillness. Whether you sit and meditate for twenty minutes or go on a walk without your phone, you need time to examine the stories you tell yourself. Are you your own worst critic or your fiercest ally? Would you say the things you tell yourself to a friend or loved one? Journal on these thoughts and see what comes up. Awareness is the first step to change. Then, incorporate positive self-talk into your daily life and you will move to a growth mindset.

A growth mindset is a term coined by Dr. Carol Dweck. A growth mindset allows you to believe that your most basic abilities can develop through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. You will look for challenges and when you are frustrated, you will persevere. Your effort and attitude determine everything as you take ownership of your life. With this mindset, you will improve how you respond to failure because you realize it is part of your growth. Your mind can be improved and strengthened just as your body can.

To sum it up, our mindset is a powerful factor in the daily progression of our health, wealth, and happiness. Our mind can be our most powerful ally or greatest enemy. We all have thought loops and limiting beliefs that can stand in the way of our success. With practice, you can learn to overcome your negative self-talk and strengthen your mind. It begins by taking ownership of your life to develop a growth mindset. Don’t be a victim and allow life to happen to you. There is no better time than now to move into the driver seat of your life.
